SOLAR AND LUNAR ECLIPSE

SOLAR ECLIPSE

As from earth view, a solar eclipse is a form of an eclipse, which occurs when the Moon passes between the sun and the earth(In this case the moon partially or fully blocks the sun). The moon acts as a barrier between earth and the sun.during this stage, the light rays of the sun is unable to reach the planet 'earth'.From the earth view, when the sun and the moon are in same ecliptic longitude (also called as conjuction). This term is known as 'Syzygy'.

There are four forms of solar eclipse:

1) Total Eclipse-It takes place when the dark shape of the moon completely blocks the bright light rays of the sun.During this time the earth is out of sun lights. It feels like evening during the daytime, when this phenomenon occurs. This eclipse is visible from the planet earth only and its duration is only for few minutes.

2)Annular Eclipse-It takes place when the sun and the moon come exactly in the same line with respect to earth. As the moon is smaller than the sun.so the sun covers all the dark shape of the moon but some of the rays of sun come to the earth in little amount.

3)Hybrid Eclipse-Hybrid Eclipse is also called as Total or Annular Eclipse. It is a change of state between total and annular eclipse. Hybrid Eclipse occurs sometimes in some places on earth when there is a shift between total and annular eclipse. Mainly it appears as a total eclipse in some places and as an annular eclipse in some places on the earth very rarely.

4)Partial Eclipse-It occurs when the sun and the moon are not in the exact same line with respect to earth. In this case, the moon cannot fully cover the sun.It just partially covers the sun. This phenomenon can be easily seen from the earth from many points. It covers like 80% of the sun's light. But though the sun's rays are very heavy during a partial eclipse, one should use a safety dark sunglasses to see it, because these rays are very harmful and carry high radiation rays. Looking directly at the sun's bright light can cause a heavy damage to the retina of the eye.

LUNAR ECLIPSE

As from Earth view, Lunar Eclipse is a form of eclipse which occurs when the moon passes behind the earth. It is also known as supermoon. In this case, the moon, the sun and the earth come in an alignment closely (in the same line).Earth comes in the middle of the sun and the moon. This whole thing is termed as 'Syzygy'.The lunar eclipse only occurs during full moonlight.During the lunar eclipse, the refracted light that we see is reddish. The lunar eclipse can be watched from any night part of the earth. Its duration is only a few hours.Lunar eclipsed can be watched without any safety glasses because it is very less bright than the full moon.

There are four types of Lunar Eclipse:

1) Penumbral Eclipse-This Eclipse occurs when the moon passes through Earth's penumbra. The penumbra of earth darkens the moon surface. When a perfect penumbral eclipse occurs then it is called as a total penumbral eclipse and it occurs very rarely.Moon lies within earth's penumbra during a penumbral eclipse.A penumbral eclipse is a form of a total lunar eclipse.

2) Partial Lunar Eclipse-This type of eclipse occurs when a portion of the moon enters the earth's umbra. A total lunar eclipse can be observed when the moon fully enters the earth's umbra.

3)Central Lunar Eclipse-During central lunar eclipse the moon passes through the center of earth's shadow. And these types of the eclipse occurs very rarely.A central lunar eclipse is a form of a total lunar eclipse.

4)Selenelion or Horizontal Eclipse-This type of eclipse occurs before or just after sunrise when the sun and the moon can be seen at the same time.It is also called as horizontal eclipse because during this phenomena, the sun and the moon will appear over the horizon and will appear opposite to each other in the sky.
